Nixon sets special election to fill 50th District seat
By Columbia Daily Tribune Staff
The seat became vacant this week when Rep. Caleb Jones, R-Columbia, resigned to become deputy chief of staff for Gov.-elect Eric Greitens. Greitens will be sworn in Monday.
Jones, 36, has served in the Missouri House since 2011 and was unopposed for re-election in November. The 50th House District includes portions of Boone, Cole and Moniteau counties.
Nixon spokesman Scott Holste confirmed Friday that the 50th district seat will remain vacant until the special election.
When Jones resigned, he said a 50th District office will remain open in the Capitol to serve constituents until the election.
The state will have Republican supermajorities in both houses of the General Assembly, along with a Republican governor after eight years of split government under Nixon, a Democrat.
Sara Walsh, a longtime Republican activist, announced her candidacy for the special election in a news release early Wednesday. Walsh, 37, is serving her third term with the Missouri Republican State Committee, representing the state’s 19th Senate District. She works as member services coordinator for the Missouri Pharmacy Association.
