COLUMBIA — State Rep. Caleb Jones, R-Columbia, has been tapped to become Gov.-elect Eric Greitens' deputy chief of staff.
The appointment takes effect Monday, when Greitens will be sworn into office. The move means a special election will be required to fill Jones' 50th District seat in the Missouri House of Representatives.
Jones, 36, has served in the House since 2011, representing southern Boone County and parts of Cole, Moniteau and Cooper counties. He was unopposed last year in his bid for a fourth two-year term.
"For me, this was about answering Governor-elect Greitens' call to service and joining an administration that will have a real positive impact on Missouri families," Jones said in the news release. "I am looking forward to advancing Governor-elect Greitens' plans to create more jobs with higher pay, safer streets and better schools for Missouri."
Greitens said in the release Jones is a "great conservative leader" who will help take Missouri in a new direction.
Republican Sara Walsh of Ashland said that she will run for the seat in the special election this year.
Walsh said that she had already been preparing for a 2018 campaign and is "ready to dive in now" with the 50th District House seat left vacant.
Walsh is the state committeewoman for the 19th Senate District and a member services coordinator for the Missouri Pharmacy Association. She also was a legislative aide in the state auditor’s office.
A date for the special election has not been set.
